Thomas Bird

Thomas Bird, Vietnam War veteran and creator of VETCO (Vietnam Veteran’s Ensemble Theatre Company).

Influenced by his own combat experience, Bird reflects on his father Dr. Samuel Bird, a veteran of WWII who, as a doctor, was a liberator of Mauthausen concentration camp in 1945. Both served their country, but they were not able to share their war experiences until the end of the older man’s life when finally a terrible secret was revealed. The pain of war and the horror of the holocaust are explored in this theatrical experience, culminating in the ultimate recognition and acknowledgement of healing through love and understanding between father and son.

Set at Mauthausen concentration camp, Bird reenacts his own visit to the camp and reflects on – maybe even channels – his father’s spirit and the memory of all of the souls at the camp that were exterminated by the Nazis. Read more about the story here.

The World Premiere of Bearing Witness is presented in collaboration with the Global Peace Film Festival and The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida.

The Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center of Florida is dedicated to teaching “the history and lessons of the Holocaust in order to build a just, caring and inclusive community free of anti-Semitism and all other forms of racism and bigotry.”
